Interview: In Conversation with Khadim Ali

Khadim Ali is a contemporary Pakistani artist who lives and works in Sydney, Quetta and Kabul. His work is featured in No Country: Contemporary Art for South and Southeast Asiathe inaugural Guggenheim UBS MAP Global Art Initiative touring exhibition, which is currently being presented at the Asia Society Hong Kong until 16 February 2013.

The title of Khadim Ali’s Rustam Series (2011–12) references the hero of the Persian Shahnameh (Book of Kings) in Ferdowsi’s 11-century epic poem. Ali’s paintings recall only his name, alluding instead to the displacement and persecution of the Hazara minority in Afghanistan and Pakistan, a community to which Ali traces his heritage.

Q: Your family left Afghanistan at a turbulent period in the country’s history. How does this affect your feelings towards the country and your place of birth?

A: My family left Afghanistan in the 1890s when the first grand massacres of Hazara started by King Amir Abdul Rahman and he massacred over 62% of the entire population of Hazaras and captured their land and took their children and ladies as slaves and sold Hazaras to India – almost 10 000 Hazaras were sold to India and all the taxes were given to the government. So it was then my grandparents left Afghanistan and moved to India, before the partition of Pakistan in India, so they chose to live at the border of Pakistan and Afghanistan with the hope that someday Afghanistan will be a free land and they are going to claim their land back, but it never happened.

Q: Hong Kong is a very multi-cultural city, home to over 7 million people of many nationalities. What are your impressions of the city?

A: I felt like everything is pointing skywards and it’s like a compressed version of New York and I was thinking I am going to have extreme problems here because I don’t speak Mandarin or Cantonese, but then almost every second person is a really good English speaking person.

Q: What do you hope audiences will take away from your work?

A: When audiences ask me what is the meaning of that particular artwork, I always think that a work of art is like a poem – when you read a poem, a poem is so versatile, you just own it and personalize it. It goes into your very personal moments and stays in you, if you like, and you translate it according to your own feeling. I think a work of art – of visual art – should be like that and having that versatility of a poem or versatility of music.

Q: Your work is informed and inspired by storytelling and ancient texts – could you elaborate on that?

A: I don’t want people to come in and look at the work the way I am looking at the work. They are free to have whatever meaning they want to – my work is part of my life and part of my career with the storytelling culture but my work is not a story. There is no story behind the work. I think there shouldn’t be any story behind any visual artwork – it should be as free as music, it should have the versatility of music.

Q: Which artists inspire you?

A: I always ask myself which artists I am inspired by but I only look at my work and can say which artists I am inspired by. I am inspired by the 15 century old master Muhammad Siyah Qalam who was also painting demons and I am really inspired by his works.

QUETTA: At least one person was killed and four others injured on Wednesday in a firing incident in Liaquat Bazaar area of Quetta, the capital of Balochistan.

Police said the incident forced shopkeepers to shut down their shutters, resulting in Liaquat Bazaar, Sattar Road and other commercial parts of Quetta to be closed.

"Miscreants opened firing in different parts of the city and caused panic," police said in a press release.

The injured were immediately rushed to civil hospital Quetta for medical treatment.

"The condition of two of the injured seems to be serious," a duty doctor who requested not to be named told Dawn.com.

An angry mob later burnt tires at Jinnah Road, Liaquat Bazaar, Bacha Khan Chowk and Qandahari Bazaar.

The protesters pelted stones at vehicles and set fire to a motorcycle in the city.

The situation prompted the Balochistan government to deploy frontier corps and a large contingent of police and Balochistan Constabulary to avert any major untoward incident.

"The situation is now under control with the support of the masses," police said.

Throughout the day, panic prevailed in the city as police and security forces patrolled all sensitive areas of Quetta.

Most of the citizens were confined to their homes in commercial areas of Quetta where the angry mob was protesting.

Similarly, there was a traffic jam as a result of the protest demonstrations.

"We faced problems because road blockades were everywhere," Dr. Irfan Tareen, a well-know physician, told Dawn.com.

All political and religious parties disowned miscreants who pelted stones and were responsible for aerial firing in the city.

Police said cases have been lodged against unknown miscreants for firing incident in City Police Station.

BBC World Service: 'Hell on Earth': Inside Quetta's Hazara community

By Mobeen AzharBBC World Service
Ruqsana Bibi at the cemetary in Quetta where her sons are buried

For years Quetta in Pakistan has rarely been visited by foreign media organisations, as it is considered too dangerous. Now a World Service investigation has uncovered the reality of life for the city's persecuted Hazara Shia community in what some describe as "hell on earth".

On 10 January 2013, a suicide bomber walked into a packed snooker hall in Quetta and detonated an explosive device, marking the beginning of what would become the bloodiest day in Pakistan's recent history.

Eight people died in the initial blast and the area soon became flooded with people trying to help. A second bomb planted on an ambulance was then detonated.

The attacks killed more than 120 people, most of them from the Hazara Shia community, in a campaign strategically planned to inflict maximum carnage.

Quetta's Hazara community is on the front line of Pakistan's battle with violent extremism.

Ruqsana Bibi lost three of her four sons on that day. The walls of her modest home are filled with family pictures. She sits on the floor holding three frames. Each contains a picture of one of the children she lost.

"I ran to the mosque barefoot and I saw the bodies of my three sons. I kissed their faces. I carried them to the cemetery myself. The eldest was Khadim Husain. I said to him: 'You must take care of your brothers in the grave.' I don't know what happened to me then. People took me home."

Mrs Bibi says her grandsons, aged nine and five, are afraid that they too will be "martyred" one day.

"They say: 'Who are these people killing us?' Who are these people that are stirring up trouble between Sunnis and Shias? It didn't used to be like this."

Mrs Bibi's family, like almost all of the victims of the Quetta attacks, are Hazara.

Hazaras are ethnically Mongolian, with oriental features and light skin, different from much of Pakistan's population.

The vast majority of Hazaras are Shia Muslim and are therefore declared "heretics" by militant Sunni Islamist groups like Lashkar-e-Jhangvi.

Quetta is home to more than half a million Hazara Shias, making them an easy target for Sunni extremists who want to punish their "heresy" with violence.

Five weeks after the attack on the snooker hall, another bomb was detonated in a crowded market place in Quetta, killing almost 90 people.

It happened as people, mainly women, were shopping for groceries and schoolchildren were coming out of their classes.

Lashkar-e-Jhangvi claimed responsibility for both attacks.

The group released a statement declaring that they planned to turn Quetta into "a graveyard for Shias".

Fighting for survival

The extreme violence in Quetta means many Hazaras feel pessimistic about their future in Pakistan. Nargis Ali, 19, was planning on going to Balochistan University, in Quetta.

But faced with the security risks, her parents have asked her to give up on academia.
A suicide bomber detonated his device in this Quetta snooker hall in January

"I got brilliant results but even the university staff say they cannot guarantee my safety. My parents really wanted me to study but they are just so scared of what will happen," she told the BBC.

"Education is the most important thing to me - but what choice do we have?"

Many young Hazaras have fled Quetta, in the hope of claiming asylum in Australia and Europe. It is estimated that 90% of those fleeing the violence do so illegally..... Continue Reading..

QUETTA:

A man was shot dead in an attack apparently triggered by sectarian hatred on Kirani Road in Quetta on Sunday.

According to police officials, gunmen riding on a motorcycle opened fire on the victim, Arif Hussain, killing him on the spot. The gunmen fled the scene soon after the shooting.

The body of the victim, who belonged to the ethnic Hazara community, was shifted to the Bolan Medical Complex (BMC) Teaching Hospital.

Police registered a case against unidentified men and have launched an investigation into the incident.

In a separate incident, a man identified as Abdul Ghafoor was shot dead when gunmen opened fire at his shop in the Saryab Mill area on the edge of Quetta.

It wasn’t immediately known who killed Ghafoor and why.

There have been two major attacks against the Hazara community in Balochistan this year.

Afghanistan’s Band-e Amir National Park Hires First Female Park Rangers

Did you know that women weren’t allowed to be park rangers in the United Statesuntil 1969? And it wasn’t until 1978 when women in the National Park Service were allowed to wear a service badge or the “male” uniform. Employment opportunities for women in America have come a long way since then, and now a national park in Afghanistan is taking steps to do the same. Band-e Amir National Park recently hired four women—Sediqa, Nikbakht, Fatima and Kubra, all of whom were formerly housewives—to become their first female park rangers. They joined a staff of 23 rangers at the park, which was established in 2009 and is known for its beautiful blue lakes and rare wildlife.... Continue Reading...

KARACHI: At least four Shia Muslims, including two doctors, were gunned down Monday and three others were injured in different parts of Karachi, police officials said.

A doctor was shot dead in Manghopir neighbourhood in the western district and another was gunned down around noon at Tariq Road in the eastern part of the city.

They were identified by police as Dr Sher Ali * and Dr Naseem Zaidi.

“The killing pattern shows that they were apparently carried out on sectarian grounds,” Javed Alam Odho, the deputy inspector general of police told AFP.

The other two victims were killed in central district when unknown attackers burst into a tailor's shop and opened fire.

The owner and a worker were killed and three others were injured.

“The attack seemed to be on sectarian lines as all of the people inside the shop were Shias,” senior police officer Aamir Farooqi said.

The latest attacks came ahead of the beginning of the Muslim holy month of Muharram, when Shias mourn the seventh century martyrdom of Hussain, the grandson of prophet Mohammad, along with his family members.

Shias make up around a fifth of Pakistan's predominantly Sunni Muslim population.

Police are already carrying out operations against criminal groups to curb sectarian and political killings. Security would be further tightened in the month of Muharram, they said.

“We are already carrying out the operation against sectarian and other elements and we would certainly intensify our efforts during the coming days,”Odho said.

Karachi, a city of 18 million people which contributes 42 per cent of Pakistan's GDP, is rife with murder and kidnappings and has been plagued for years by ethnic, sectarian and political violence

* Dr. Sher Ali : Dr, Sher Ali was secretary general of Hazara Mughal Yekjehti Forum, an organisation representing Hazara diaspora in Karachi. Only few months ago, son of the president of this forum also became victim of the ongoing onslaught of Shias in the city. Dr. Sher was the second general secretary of this organisation shot dead by the militant outfits after Qurban Ali Ajiz.

QUETTA: Six coal miners were shot dead while another was injured in Mach area of Kachi district – about 90 kilometers off Quetta – on Friday.

“The victims are labourers who belonged to the Shia Hazara community. It is clearly a sectarian targeted killing,” DC Kachi Waheed Shah told Express Tribune.

The coal miners were returning from a trip to Mach bazaar, where they often went to shop on Fridays. The crime scene is seven kilometer off the main highway.

“As they crossed a huge drainage off the national highway, a group of armed men opened fire at their vehicle,” added DC Shah.

Levies officials and security forces reached the spot soon after the incident and cordoned off the area. However, the assailants had already escaped by then. The injured is said to be in a critical condition.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, a militant group officially banned by the government in 2002, usually claims responsibility for attacks on Shia Muslims.

A week ago, seven passenger buses of Shia pilgrims were attacked with a car bomb. The blast killed two personnel of Frontier Corps (FC) while Shia pilgrims remained unhurt in the attack.

Upon observing a car suspiciously parked near the highway, FC personnel stopped the buses from proceeding on the National Highway in the Dringar area of Mastung. As they tried to search the vehicle, a explosion took place.

MANILA, Philippines -- Afghanistan's first and only female governor and a humanitarian worker from Myanmar's Kachin minority are among this year's recipients of the Ramon Magsaysay Awards, often regarded as Asia's version of the Nobel Prize.
The Manila-based Ramon Magsaysay Awards Foundation announced Wednesday that it had selected three individuals and two organizations as this year's awardees, including a Filipino doctor, an independent commission eradicating corruption in Indonesia and a civil society organization in Nepal created and run by human trafficking victims.
The awards, named after a popular Philippine president who died in a 1957 plane crash, honor people and groups who change their societies for the better.
Habiba Sarabi, 57, was chosen for helping build a functioning local government and pushing for education and women's rights in Afghanistan's Bamyan province despite working in a violent and impoverished environment in which discrimination is pervasive, the foundation said. Public education and the ratio of female students have increased in her province, where more women are taking up careers that were forbidden under the 1996-2001 Taliban regime..... QUETTA: The Frontier Corps (FC) claimed to have foiled a major terror bid by seizing more than 100 tons explosives from Quetta, the capital of troubled Balochistan province on Tuesday night.

Commandant FC, Colonel Maqbool told reporters that the forces seized a huge quantity of explosive material during a raid at a warehouse in New Addah area of Quetta.

“Forces recovered 104,480 kilograms of explosive materials from the godown,” he informed.

Maqbool said the explosive material include potassium chloride, aluminum chloride, improvised explosive devices, detonators, circuit wires and other arms and ammunition during the operation.

He said the forces have picked up 10 suspected militants also during the operation that lasted for more than an hour. “All suspects have been shifted for interrogation,” Maqbool said.

Senior FC and police officers are interrogating the suspects picked up by forces.

“For the first time in the history of country, such huge quantity of explosives have been seized,” the FC commandant said, adding that the forces deserve to be appreciated for their efforts.

He said the miscreants had made secret rooms and planted explosive materials in five rooms to carry out subversive activities in Quetta, plagued by sectarian violence and attacks by Baloch separatists.

Maqbool said the same explosive material was used in Hazara town bombing on April 16, which had left more than 100 people dead. “These explosive materials could be used in suicide jackets as well,” he added.

All explosives were shifted to an unknown location and the bomb disposal squad was called in to sweep the area. Extra FC troops were also called in the area to maintain the order.

The operations were carried out after a series of bombings in Quetta that claimed scores of precious lives. Balochistan in general and Quetta city in particular are under the grip of rocketing, bombings and targeted killings for last more than a decade.

911 terror chief's nephew leads massacre of Shias in Quetta

A close relative of the 911 terror mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who is known as KSM among U.S. intelligence circles, is spearheading the massacre of Shias in Pakistan’s volatile Balochistan province, according to Pakistani media reports.

Badini is reportedly a deputy of Usman Kurd, chief of the Balochistan chapter of Lashkar-i-Jhangvi terrorist organization. Besides being a nephew of KSM, Badini is brother-in-law of Ramzi Yusuf, who was allegedly involved in the first attack on the World Trade center in 1993.

Lashkar-i-Jhangvi has killed upwards of 2,000 Shia Hazaras in Quetta and Mastung, whch is today the second largest training grounds of LJ after Punjab. The LJ’s main demand is to get the Shias declared as non-Muslims.

According to Senator Hasil Bizenjo, who is said to be Premier Nawaz Sharif's eyes and ears in Balochistan, during elections this year the LJ offered complete support to his party, National Party, on a condition of that the Shias be declared non-Muslims once the party wins the elections. Bizenjo replied, "No."

Balochistan insiders have long blamed Saudi Arabia for sectarian violence in Balochistan. “The chickens have come home to roost,” says former speaker of Balochistan assembly Mir Akram Dashti. “The Saudis pumped billions into the seminaries in Balochistan in the name of Afghan jihad,” Dashti told this correspondent on phone from Turbat.

The U.S. government declared the LJ a terrorist organization in 2003, the same year KSM was arrested from the home of a serving military officer in Rawalpindi. Badini's arrest followed a year later and was reported by The New York Times.

The Kurd-Badini duo appears to be enjoying support of influential Islamist spies in the Pakistani security establishment, who enabled him to escape from the Anti Terrorism Force jail in Quetta in 2008. At that time, the C.I.A. was spreading its dragnet to nab Osama bin Laden.

According to a Pakistani media news report, “The Kurd-Badini, duo which now spearheads the ongoing massacre of Shia Hazaras in Balochistan, had made good its escape under mysterious circumstances after breaking the ATF jail despite the fact that it is located in the high security garrison zone of Quetta Cantonment.”

Violently anti-Shia, Badini's family patriarch is KSM’s eldest brother Zahid Sheikh Mohammed, who now lives in Dubai and is believed to be much higher than KSM in the al Qaeda hierarchy.

In Iran, another Baloch wahabi organization called Jondullah had actively targetted innocent civilians, both Iranians and Baloch, since the first Bush government in early 2000s. The Obama administration declared Jondullah a terrorist organization in fall 2010.

QUETTA: Gunmen killed two people from Pakistan’s Shia community on Monday when they opened fire on a taxi in Quetta, which has been gripped by a wave of sectarian bloodshed, police said.

The attack took place at the busy Iqbal avenue in the southwestern city, the capital of Balochistan where the surge in sectarian unrest has killed scores of Shias.

“The driver and a passenger boarding the taxi, both were Shias. They died after unknown gunmen fired at their car,” said Fayyaz Sumbal, a senior police official in Quetta.

He said that the two attackers were waiting for the taxi to arrive at the busy avenue and escaped on a motorbike after spraying bullets at the vehicle.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, a militant group officially banned by the government in 2002, usually claims responsibility for attacks on Shia Muslims.

Elsewhere in Balochistan, two people were killed and three wounded in a bomb attack on a mosque close to customs offices at the Chaman border crossing to Afghanistan.

A local senior official Ibrahim Baloch gave the death toll for the Chaman bombing and said that a second bomb had been found in the area.

“We suspect that one of the dead had been trying to plant the bomb, but we can’t confirm this suspicion at the moment,” he said.
